Dental Veneers: Instantly Improve Your Smile

If you want to correct smile flaws, like the appearance of crooked teeth or discoloration, you might be an ideal candidate for dental veneers. Veneers are one of the most effective, simple ways to get your dream smile. This innovative treatment allows patients to fix cosmetic issues without orthodontics or invasive oral surgery.

At 51³Ô¹ÏÍø, we want you to love your smile. Continue reading to learn more about dental veneers from our cosmetic dentist in Chicago, IL.

What are Dental Veneers?

Dental veneers are small, forward-facing tooth caps that are placed on the fronts of teeth. They provide a permanent overlay that hides imperfections, such as stains, minor chips, asymmetry, and other dental flaws.

Veneers match your natural teeth and blend in with the rest of your smile. At 51³Ô¹ÏÍø, we use a superior shade matching system to ensure your smile restorations look completely natural.

What Do Veneers Treat?

Dental veneers are a versatile treatment in cosmetic dentistry. They can fix many flaws and even minor functional issues. Examples include:

  • Chipped or cracked teeth
  • Worn teeth
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Crooked or overlapping teeth
  • Discolored teeth
  • Small, uneven, or misshapen teeth

Veneers allow patients to enjoy improvements to their smile quickly. While traditional orthodontic care is great for straightening teeth, closing gaps, and improving bite alignment, results can take years. Dental veneers are typically applied in just 2-3 appointments.

If you’ve ever looked in the mirror and felt self-conscious about your smile, veneers could be a great way to restore your confidence and smile beauty!

Different Types of Dental Veneers

There are a few types of dental veneers, the most common being porcelain veneers. Porcelain veneers are extremely durable and long-lasting. They also look nearly identical to natural teeth.

Below is a list of several different types of veneers:

  • Porcelain Veneers
  • Composite Veneers
  • No-Prep Veneers
  • Removable Veneers
  • Palatal Veneers (used to restore structural integrity to the backs of teeth)

Some veneers are more durable than others, and one variety may be better for treating a specific issue compared to another. For example, porcelain veneers are great for repairing chipped teeth due to their durability. No-prep veneers are great for patients who want to protect their natural tooth enamel and don’t have excessive tooth discoloration.

Dr. Griffin will recommend the most conservative treatment option based on your current oral health and smile goals.

The Dental Veneers Process

The application process for dental veneers will vary based on what type of veneers you choose. There is little to no enamel removal required for no-prep veneers. However, for porcelain and other types of veneers, the application process is more extensive.

  • At 51³Ô¹ÏÍø, we begin with a consultation. Once we’ve assessed your dental health and smile goals, we’ll build a 3-D model of your teeth. This will be used to generate your smile preview, which allows you to see what your new smile will look like after treatment. It’s also easy to make any changes you want prior to the procedure.
  • At your first procedure appointment, we’ll start by removing a thin layer of tooth enamel to accommodate the veneers. Then, a digital impression of your teeth will be taken to create your permanent veneers.
  • After your teeth have been fully prepped, temporary veneers will be placed, and you’ll leave the office with an already improved smile. The digital impression will be sent to a lab where your permanent veneers will be crafted.
  • In about 2-4 weeks, you’ll return to the dental office to receive your permanent veneers. Your dentist will remove the temporary veneers and place the new, custom-made ones. After checking your bite to ensure comfort and proper function, your restoration will be complete!

Caring for Your Restoration

Veneers require the same care as your natural teeth. It’s important to brush and floss every day, as well as visit your dentist regularly for exams.

Dental veneers have pros and cons. While they are durable, eating hard or crunchy foods is not recommended. Things like nuts and apples could cause damage to your veneers. If you grind your teeth, you should wear a mouthguard to avoid chipping or cracking your veneers and natural teeth.

How Long Do Dental Veneers Last?

With proper at-home care, your veneers should last anywhere from 5-15 years or longer, depending on the type.

Good Candidates for Veneers

During your consultation with Dr. Griffin, you’ll learn whether you’re a good candidate for dental veneers. Patients who benefit from veneers often have noticeable smile flaws they want to cover, such as uneven front teeth or stubborn staining.

Should I Get Dental Crowns or Veneers?

Dental crowns, sometimes called “dental caps,” are another method used to treat dental flaws. When deciding on dental caps versus veneers, your dentist will look at the condition of your teeth. Unless the structural integrity of a tooth has been compromised, veneers are likely more appropriate. Veneers are a more conservative treatment option, as they require less enamel removal than dental crowns.

Veneers are ideal for fixing minor structural flaws and cosmetic concerns. Crowns repair teeth that have been severely damaged by injury or decay. The team at 51³Ô¹ÏÍø will help you understand which treatment is best for you.
